Thornmere Shouts Down the Kilns
- Cheap passage
- Busier than the day
- Passage slackens
Ilse Thornmere stood on the gantry above the Kilnrows lamp-floor and bawled down the row that the north kilns were to be banked and the east ones kept hot until the crowd thinned. Her crew moved before she had finished. A brick went under the north door, a shovel of ash smothered the coals, and the kiln mouth sank to a low grumble. The catch came through on time, and the crew went back to work with soot on their collars.
